DD mourns the loss of Marta Hancock
If you are from Derby, a local disabled person, or work in this sector, you will have probably come across Marta at some point in your lives.
Marta was a leading voice in disability related issues and campaigned tirelessly on equal rights. She was a member of several organisations which support disabled people including Muscle Power, Ataxia UK and of course Disability Direct. She spent 7 years on our board, the majority of which as Chair Person, and the contributions she made have shaped the way the charity is run today.
Today we attended her funeral, joined by dozens of family and friends. Marta lost her fight with Friedreichs Ataxia, an impairment she so tirelessly fought for much of her life and passed away surrounded by family at her home on the 19th June.
The disabled peoples movement has lost a fierce spirit who never gave up and I have lost a dear friend who changed my life for the better.
Rest in peace Marta, you will be missed.
