Plot to Plate – Meet Sally Austin
Who will support you?
Hi, I’m Sally Austin and I have been working at Disability Direct since 2004 and have been the Director of Operations since April 2017. Plot to Plate is a pet project of mine since I am mainly office based and we don’t have project workers for this service I jumped at the chance to get out and get this project off the ground.
What Does The Project Do?
The project aims to bring people together from the wider community to share skills, learn new techniques, grow produce and share healthy eating advice.
The plot is 250 square meters of perfect growing space, so there is plenty of room to grow an array of vegetables and fruits. We hold cookery classes, jam making sessions and share ideas on how to best preserve the fruit and veg.
Is there a charge for the service?
No, it’s totally free, although we ask for a donation of £1 a week towards the tea kitty.
I already have a vegetable garden, can i join?
Yes of course, we will be grateful for the help and expertise.
Is the allotment accessible?
It is accessible as we can possibly get it with the restrictions we have had to face. We have a lovely decked area with seating, decked and slabbed pathways and raised beds. There is also a large toilet block which includes an accessible loo.
Do you have a greenhouse?
We have a fantastic 25ft x 14ft ploy tunnel. Masses of space to grow fruit and veg that love a warm environment.
Where is the allotment?
Little Chester Allotments, off Old Mansfield Rd, Derwent Heights.
